Tenchi Muyo! was never very ambitious in the story department—aside from a few movies and some series-ending story arcs, it was always more about silly sitcom action. In this respect, GXP is no different, except the sitcom action now happens in space. The plotline on this disc is fairly easy to follow: Good Luck Fleet challenges Seina, Seina heads them off, bad guy makes improvements to Good Luck Fleet and challenges Seina again. Whether this chain of events will hold the viewer's interest is another matter. Throughout the episodes, there never seems to be any dramatic impulse or strong conflict. Without the sitcom action, GXP would be just a dreary space drama. The sense of humor is surprisingly diverse, from some wry deadpan moments, to the usual wacky boy-girl antics, and the occasional crude gag that's just plain wrong. Unfortunately, the jokes aren't really laugh-out-loud funny, and they're hardly enough to save the flatness of the show.

For many fans, Tenchi Muyo! was their first introduction to the "harem" sub-genre of anime: one ordinary guy being lusted after by cute girls of all types. With charming and memorable characters like the sharp-tongued space pirate Ryoko, haughty princess Ayeka, and indomitable genius Washu, the Tenchi franchise was a cornerstone of 90's comedy anime. Now it crawls into the digital animation age with an exhausted gasp, in the guise of Tenchi Muyo GXP. With the original cast all but gone, and only the most superficial elements of Tenchi's world intact, this is one show that could have been called "No Need for a Tenchi Spin-off."

Before anyone mistakes this for a curmudgeonly "it's not as good as the old version" rant, it's worth remembering that the 90's Tenchi Muyo! titles—the OVA, Tenchi Universe, the movies, maybe even Tenchi in Tokyo—made quite a noticeable impression. They weren't masterpieces, but they were enjoyable works of romantic comedy, and by being part of the Tenchi family, GXP must be measured by those same standards. Is it enjoyable? Is it funny? Does it contain characters that we'd like to see more of?

In addition to the five episodes, ADV packs in an assortment of mostly-standard but still numerous extras. Viewers will find clean opener and closer, character sketches, and production artwork in addition to company previews and a Next Volume preview. Also included is a lexicon which elaborates on several items which come up in these five episodes (although it doesn't really say anything that isn't in the series itself) and brief Character Bios on all the significant cast members. Fair warning, these bios do contain a spoiler about Lucky's big secret, so don't peruse them until after you've seen the fourth episode if you want to be surprised.

The first volume of Hakugei takes a few episodes to establish the setting and the addition of Lucky and Dew to Ahab's crew before ultimately setting them off in the direction of Moad and an encounter with Moby Dick, so this volume can be looked upon as merely the set-up for the true meat of the story. If you're looking for a faithful adaptation of Melville'S novel then this series may disappoint you, as it plays out exactly like one would expect an Anime Insider “What If Moby Dick Were Made As An Anime” bit to look, but if you'd settle for a fun, entertaining sci-fi adventure series which won't wow you on artistic or technical merits then Hakugei may well fit your bill.

ADV's English dub also fares much better, though some might quibble about how different some of the key performances are from the originals. Kira Vincent Davis's rendition of Lucky gives the character a raspy child's voice compared to the more effeminate voice offered by the seiyuu, but for various reasons this proves to be the right call as the volume wears on. John Swasey portrays Ahab in full-blown stereotypical pirate captain fashion compared to the deeper and more resonating voice of the seiyuu, but the English interpretation feels much more accurate given that the series has gone to great pains to draw and characterize Ahab as a classic Western pirate captain. (And, let's face it, there's really no way to do a classic Western pirate captain in Japanese.) Other roles and performance qualities match up reasonably well. The English script takes some liberties, the most obvious involving an incident near the beginning of episode 4 where a couple of off-color jokes told by Atre (the kid), whose humor wouldn't have survived the translation (as one can see from looking at the subtitles), were completely rewritten. Ahab's dialogue is also restyled into typical pirate speech patterns, while in other places things are described with basically the same meaning but entirely different words in the English script compared to the subtitles. Those looking for a close-to-literal dub job won't find it here, but none of the essential meaning is changed.

Although Hakugei dates to 1997, it looks older. The painted background artistry is cluttered and busy but also has the kind of worn look rarely seen anymore in this age of digital rendering and animation. While this works well to give ships and derelicts a run-down feel, it doesn't look sharp or impressive compared even to other series from the same era. Ahab has the full-blown classic pirate look going for him, down even to a mechanical parrot, and other core characters all have distinctive looks, but the artistic detail isn't sharp in the designs. Ship designs also have a rough, flat, and unexciting look to them, and you'll be hard-pressed to find a series which more heavily uses “highlight” still shots. Action scenes use typical short cuts so heavily that none of the fights have much of a dynamic feel about them, and even in some regular scenes the animation can be rough and stiff. While the artistry and animation aren't bad enough to turn anyone off just on those merits, this isn't a series that's going to “wow” anyone with its visuals.

Much of the soundtrack is also a throwback, with music used to back many scenes sounding like something from a stereotypical '80s action series. While it fares better – even well - in some spots, it is the series' weakest aspect. The opener is forgettable, while the pleasant ending theme “Yakusoku” is a much stronger adult contemporary-style number.

Evaluated solely as a stand-alone piece, Hakugei fares well as a sci-fi adventure tale in the spirit of Outlaw Star. The cast beyond Ahab is a typical anime collection of misfits: the little kid who acts older than his age, the speed freak, the scientist computer geek, the huge muscle-bound guy of limited vocabulary who eats anything (even plates!), the fat cook, the sullen, elitist sword specialist, a lively doctor who always wears armor, an android looking for his purpose, and a newcomer kid who's something other than what he appears to be but wins a position as an apprentice through sheer determination. As is often the case in such stories, the free-wheeling blending of individual talents is what makes the crew so effective that their team of (originally) eight is regarded as the elite of the whale-hunter crews in a profession where crew sizes of 30+ are the norm. By the end of the first volume, though, none of the characters beyond Ahab have had a chance to show much depth. At this point most are just basic archetypes.

Yet the spoofing doesn't stop there. Each character maps to a particular superhero stereotype, and Episode 1 directs our attention to Wild Tiger, a blue-suited veteran whose freewheeling, collateral-damage-causing habits have worn out the goodwill of his sponsors. When his job is reshuffled after a company buyout, Tiger figures it's time to look for a new line of work ... until he discovers the new management has decided to make him a sidekick to the babyfaced newcomer who will inherit Tiger's powers. Talk about a sharp-witted, socially relevant slap in the face.

Where this episode trips up is in trying to wow the audience with a nonstop, 10-minute action sequence to start the show—when in fact the premise is already understood within the first two minutes and the rest is just over-the-top madness that leaves you wondering when the real story is going to start.

Slick production values, bright colors and unique character designs (with faces made to look distinctively Western) will keep eyes glued to the screen for this series, although the CGI looks a bit forced and perhaps calls too much attention to how much is being spent on the animation budget. Rousing battle music also adds heft to the action scenes, promising a superhero adventure that's as intense as it is clever.

While not the lead heroine, Yuki has proven to be one of the most popular characters in the series, and for no small reason: where Haruhi is an over-the-top but cheerful bully and Mikuru a well-intentioned blob of extreme anxiety (would she really NEVER get the hang of Haruhi's insanity?), Yuki is incessantly calm and quiet- but not emotionless. In novel form, Kyon primarily tells the reader of her slight changes in expression, but in the anime, those rare and minute shifts truly shine. Subtlety: hey, it can happen.

The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya places a larger spotlight on Yuki than past story arcs, to strong effect. It's also impressive that Kyoto Animation managed to make Yuki's Haruhi-less self—a socially reclusive high school girl with a touch of a crush on Kyon, of course -very different from the also-timid Mikuru. One could imagine Mikuru as a scared rabbit flailing to get away from a predator and Yuki as a timid but not disinterested kitten, although they admittedly suffer from very different machinations (Haruhi's and Kyon's, respectively).

Fans of Mikuru may not get their fill in this movie, but they will enjoy the return of adult Mikuru. Haruhi herself has several strong moments as well- in fact, some viewers may prefer the powerless Haruhi to her original-timeline counterpart. Kyon, of course, takes the firm lead, and perhaps occasionally over-narrates, but Kyon's tone is so well-written it's hard to complain about it…much. And sorry, Koizumi fans: his role, as usual, is decidedly smaller than the other four SOS Brigade members'. (All twelve of you can send your letters of complaint to Kyo-Ani.)

It should be said that the larger storyline of the movie is predictable. Author Nagaru Tanigawa glosses over this with his colorful characters, enjoyable dialogue, and surprise mini-twists, so for the most part fans will forgive that. However, Kyon spends too long making an idiot of himself trying to confirm that something unnatural has truly happened rather than some sort of massive-scale pranking, which seems a bit odd for a guy who time travels to keep an insane high school girl-slash-god from remaking the universe. As a result of this and other somewhat overzealous tone-setting, viewers will definitely feel the nearly-three-hour length of the film by the end of it. Truly obsessive Haruhi fans will be thrilled about this attention to detail, but more casual fans should make sure they get a comfy chair.

While GONZO is known more for their integration of CGI into regular animation, they've also made quite a name for themselves with some unique tales. Of course, with Last Exile, you are drawn to the vivid world GONZO paints first. The world of Last Exile looks like it stepped right out of a Michael Moorcock Eternal Champion novel. Much like the Nomad of Time, the characters wander around a world filled with mighty airships dealing with the troubles of a world still bogged down with a dramatic difference between noblemen and the common people. Continuing the contrast amongst the characters is the costuming that is very European in feel. Daring to push the limits of their experience, GONZO continues to integrate CGI vessels and settings in with their regular animation. With careful observation, it's easy to spot the two different formats, but their integration together is very smooth. Dealing with more real world constraints, GONZO manages to sneak in these beautiful effects for spectacular results.

Not to be outdone by the spectacular visuals, the soundtrack also contributes its fair share to the unique flavor of Last Exile. Sticking with the European theme, the majority of the music sounds fresh from the European continent. Relying on simple folklore'esque themes, the music builds with the action on the screen, helping to accentuate the story. While emphasis is on the old world feel, the music still manages to to reflect a more modern sound. Working well within the boundaries of the music score are the two casts; English and Japanese. The English side of things is being handled by the folks of Bang Zoom, with Eric Sherman directing. With a strong range of characters, it's not surprising that some of the better known names of the California voice-acting scene are present for this track. Taking on the lead roles are Johnny Yong Bosch as Claus and Kari Wahlgren as Lavi. Handling the role of the enigmatic Alex Row is Crispin Freeman. Michelle Ruff handles double duty as Alvis and Tatiana Wilsa. With only four episodes on this disc, each actor is slowly getting into their character. Last Exile is a tale with many twists and turns, and this experienced cast should excel in its delivery, despite the challenges that teh series will present.

Characterizations also suffer for lack of development, as none of the major characters advance beyond basic personality traits (and some not even that far). Agito, the male lead, is your typical adventuresome young man, while mostly helpless Toola, the female “lead,” is so bland that she serves more as a plot device than an actual character until the late stages of the movie. Considering that the whole “spirit of the past” subheading refers as much to her trying to let go of the past and live in the present as Shanuck's inability to do so, she is a particular disappointment. Shanuck fares a lot better, as the storytelling successfully manages to obfuscate whether he is a true villain or just a guy with a different viewpoint until the late stages of the movie. Other supporting cast members are just common archetypes filling in their required positions in the scheme of things and being conveniently ignored or discarded when not needed.

While the writing may be on the weak side, the visuals most certainly are not. Backgrounds, whether featuring the underground ruins, cleverly-designed Neutral City, or the settings of Ragna and Istok, are striking and beautifully-detailed, and CG designs for mechanical units are so finely-rendered that it takes a bit of concentration to recognize them as being CG effects. None of the character designs stand out as particularly distinctive or original but they are nonetheless well-drawn, with the only slight weak point being the handling of facial expressions on some characters. Most impressive is the vibrant use of color, especially the sharp red tones in the uniforms of Shanuck and the female Ragna officer and the outfit Toola starts wearing upon visiting Ragna. The animation also stands among Gonzo's finer efforts, but you would expect nothing less from a project with a feature-movie budget. It is not hard to see why Origins was nominated for the 30th Annual Annecy International Animation Film Festival, as its look can easily attract attention. Also be sure to watch fully through the credits for bonus scenes.

Though its style is certainly manga-influenced, 12 Days would more accurately be called manwha or perhaps even OEL, as creator June Kim is a Korean transplant to New York City. Best-known for her work as a cartoonist and illustrator on album covers and for various magazines, the one-shot 12 Days represents her first full-fledged graphic novel. The narrative ability she shows here suggests that you can expect more of her graphic novels to see publication in years to come.

The premise may be creepy, but it is derived from ancient Greek history and supposedly based on a real-life story Ms. Kim was once told. At its heart it is a story about trying to find a way to cope with a devastating loss, one made all the more painful by the fact that the heroine was just getting over losing her former lover to marriage at the time that it happened. As the days and chapters progress the narrative mixes in flashbacks to assorted points in the relationship of Jackie and Noah, gradually showing how the roots of their relationship go back to their teenage years, how close they were, and the circumstances of their break-up. This isn't done in any sort of chronological order, so it takes some effort (and probable rereads) to piece the whole story together, and there are critical story points which could be missed if one isn't careful. Some of the time frame switches aren't clarified, either, which obfuscates things further.

Those are the only significant flaws in what is otherwise a very well-written story, however. Dialogue, behaviors, and relationships all feel credible enough, and the story neither dodges nor overly emphasizes that the central relationship involves lesbians. Though the gay factor does complicate certain family matters, the other circumstances present here could just as easily apply to a hetero relationship, so not dwelling too much on that aspect is as it should be. The manga influences on the writing can be seen most clearly in the oft-comical asides, which might seem incongruous in such weighty subject matter but serve well to offset the gloomy overtones.

Ms. Kim's character designs do a fine job of portraying appealing, realistically mature characters; they even, to an extent, depicts variations due to racial features without resorting to caricature. Background art is less detailed and more sporadic, and shading effects and patterns depend heavily on CG effects. The manga influence can be seen here in the occasional use of superdeformed art and similar effects, although such tricks aren't used heavily. Although word balloons do make it clear who is saying what, the way the dialogue is printed in the balloons leaves a bit to be desired. It's clear and easily-readable, but also clearly typed rather than hand-written, which can be disconcerting for those not used to it.

This 1989 vintage OVA series was originally released on VHS in a subtitled-only version in 1996 and a dubbed version in 2000, both by ADV. The two volumes of this 2005 release, which each consist of two 50-minute episodes, mark the first appearance of the series on DVD. Unlike other older titles ADV has rereleased in recent years, nothing special was done for this one; the original subbed and dubbed versions were slapped on a pair of DVDs along with some trailers and menu screens and that's it. These are as no-frills as ADV releases get.

Shuten Doji is the brainchild of Go Nagai, so one can expect certain things of it: two or more of extensive graphic violence, gratuitous nudity, and scenes of women being treated badly will be present. Shuten Doji delivers quite heavily on all three. Not an episode goes by without poor Miyuki ending up naked at some point, but the entire point to her existence in the series seems to be to get her clothes ripped off and be victimized by the bad guys – a phenomenon hardly unique in Go Nagai-inspired works. Three of the other five female characters of any significance also get their turns appearing in the buff (two by choice, one not), but at least they have some purpose beyond being just victims and at least most of them are quite capable of fighting back.

The fan service pales in comparison to the graphic violence, though. Oodles of oni pop up throughout the series to lay some serious smack down on both humans and each other, although Jiro and his human allies also find themselves on the delivering end of extensive bloodletting. Blood sprays are frequent as heads get ripped off, limbs are severed, and bodies are crushed, impaled, or cut in half with great frequency. While there is quite a lot of it, the gory violence generally lacks the intensity and refined detail of a title like Elfen Lied, Gantz, or Ninja Scroll (with the exception of one ugly scene involving an airlock door on a spaceship), but it isn't for lack of effort. Perhaps it's the absence of realism that fails to fully sell the violence, as the heroes amazingly never get a speck of blood on them despite the massive splatter potential.

The basic premise borrows from stories told of the legendary 10th century Japanese warrior Minamoto no Raikou and his great defeat of the supposed demon Shuten Doji, but it strays vastly from the old stories by having “Shuten Doji” instead be the title of some mythical bringer of light whose destiny it is to defeat a great oni lord. Things become muddled further as the series uses weak excuses to jump between 10th century Heian-kyo, late 20th century Japan, and a spaceship circa 2100 A.D., sticks a cyborg into the mix, and comes up with a creative way to explain the existence of Shuten Doji and the oni world which makes less sense the more one thinks about it. Although a good mystery about one character is set up, plot execution is not one of the stronger points of the series. In fact the best-written episode, where Miyuki is stuck in the past and Jiro is on the spaceship, actually has the least to do with the thin overall plot. Do pay attention to the scenes shown during the opening credits of the first episode, however, as they come into play later.

Let's get one thing straight: if you're a girl ages three to six, you'll probably love Mao-chan, and rightfully so. It's adorable and mostly harmless as entertainment for children. If you have small children, you may want to consider this as worthy entertainment. They won't learn anything from it, but they'll probably love watching little girls bonk kittens and bunnies on the head over and over again. Here's the problem, though: Geneon isn't marketing this to children. Mao-chan has “buy me, otaku!” written all over it. Premium reversible packaging, a 29.99 price point, a Japanese-language option and a special edition collectible lunchbox are all hallmarks of “cute show for adults” positioning. Sure, the kids might like the special edition doodads, but we all know who these products are being sold to. Simply put, this needed to be sold as a show for children.

Mao-chan has been designed from the ground up to be as obnoxiously cute as possible. Created by Ken Akamatsu, the ‘genius’ behind Love Hina, the entire show oozes saccharine from every orifice. The basic story of each short episode is the same: Mao-chan or one of her prepubescent friends gets assigned a ‘cute alien invader’ to take down. A bunny or a kitten or a little bat or something else, trapped inside a vending machine toy capsule, falls to earth, and promptly gets bonked on the head. Repeat ad nauseum. The truth is, it's an old joke by the end of the first episode, and the screenwriters seem to be relying on the ‘adorable’ production design to keep people distracted from the fact that they've written a repetitive, unfunny train wreck of a series. Yes, we get it, it's cute. Remind me again why we're supposed to continue watching this dreck?

The problem is, shows like this a routinely excused by fans as being ‘light and fun’ and are apparently totally impervious to criticism because they're ‘just supposed to be cute’ and nothing more. Anyone who criticizes these shows for being lame and obnoxious are attacked and characterized as joyless sticks in the mud who can't appreciate something for what it's supposed to be. Bad anime is bad anime, folks, regardless of the director's intent. From a production standpoint, Mao-chan is handsome. The character designs are much closer to Akamatsu's signature (read: only) style than the Love Hina anime series, which many fans complained was too far from the original manga look. There are several visual references to Love Hina throughout the show, including plenty of turtles and a Narusegawa look-alike character. Mao-chan and her friends are animated with flair and fluidity by Production I.G, and the episodes, while short, feature mostly impressive animation. The soundtrack is excessively simple and seems like it's just some guy messing around on a piano; it's a sparse score anyway, punctuating only the transformation sequences and a few key action moments.

The dub, directed by the same woman who mangled the English version of Love Hina, is unbearable. I have a message for English dub directors: if a character has a strange speech pattern in Japanese, please, for the love of all that is good and holy, don't try and emulate it in English. English speech patterns aren't similar to Japanese speech patterns at all and one does not translate to the other. The result always sounds horribly awkward. You're obviously reaching for ‘purity’ points by making the character say “I say that, yes I do!” after every sentence, but it just sounds awful and lame. The Misora character, like Kenshin in the soul-crushing Rurouni Kenshin dub, says “I say!” after every other line. The voice actress performing this role isn't capable of making that sound believable at all. The other voices are obnoxiously high-pitched, straining to sound as cute as possible. There's nary a decent voice in this dub; it's a complete disaster. Of course, switching to the Japanese will result in obnoxious Japanese voices so high your ears will ring for several hours after hearing it just once. You can't win. The solution? Don't watch Mao-chan.

Stripped of all of its trappings, Rumbling Hearts is at its core a love triangle, albeit one shaped by tragic happenstance and the inexorable effects of passing time. The entire series boils down to one choice, as Takayuki must eventually choose between Mitsuki and Haruka, and the emotional toll that the need to make that decision and the decision itself takes on all of the participants. And choose he does. Depending on which character one is most emotionally invested in, the results will range from bittersweet to plain old bitter, but regardless of one's satisfaction with the outcome, the emotional power of it is undeniable: a show whose cruel twists of fate and unpleasant yet powerfully affecting character dynamics will linger in the memory long after the end credits roll, no matter how desperately one might want to forget.

The overall plot is a twist on the standard hero tale. Instead of the main protagonist being an upstanding heroic figure, it turns out he's pretty much a rotten individual. He's not out to be the hero for glory or to help others; he's strictly out to get more money and to protect his property (amongst which he groups Fizz, Kiss and Genmi). The motives for the rest of the characters are a bit unclear. Fizz is apparently with Shibas to redeem his soul and make him a better person. It really doesn't fit well because its quite obvious he isn't willing to change. The fact that she travels with him seems more like a plot device to try and create a certain amount of drama and a lot of comical situations. The major problem with this being a 2 episode OAV is of course a lot of the character background and setup is compressed allowing the show to move directly into the action. A longer OAV series could have gone a long way to explain why these characters are together and just where they are going.

The story itself is pretty self-contained, so there shouldn't be any worries over cliffhanger endings. Most of the action that takes place seems to be centered on humiliating Fizz, the only good soul of the bunch. It's almost as the creators decided that they really don't like nice people and wanted to create this to punish them. The villain in this series exists strictly to make Fizz realize that being owned by Shibas isn't such a bad thing after all. No real threat seems to exist to the characters because of the foreshadowed power of Shibas. The ending is no surprise and is really rather anti-climatic.

Sorcerer on the Rocks really feels like someone wanted an excuse to humiliate the hero stereotype. All the characters are one-dimensional with no real depth to them. Any potential for good character development is shot due to the shortness of this series. Given more episodes, the characters and plot have the potential to really entertain, but with only two episodes, the viewer really doesn't feel drawn into this world.

Based on the novel Sans Famille by French author Hector Malot and animated in 1977 almost exactly a century after its original publication, Nobody's Boy - Remi is another series in Imaginasian's laudable mini-crusade to bring classic anime to American fans. While it's perhaps more classical-feeling than actually "classic" (classic is a tricky term, probably better applied to the influential Cat's Eye, another of Imaginasian's shows), Remi is excellent old-fashioned entertainment.

While nominally children's entertainment and containing nothing that would be objectionable to parents, Remi isn't the kind of cheerful escapism usually associated with children's shows. Basically a series of atrocities visited upon an innocent and helpless hero, it is often unremittingly grim. It is unflinching in its portrayal of the rural poverty, bourgeois elitism, smog-laden crime-ridden cities, and cruel economic and social injustices of Industrial Revolution-era France. The people Vitalis and Remi encounter are often petty and selfish, and occasionally downright vile. Any happy event for Remi almost invariably ends in a cruel betrayal of his expectations, in some crushing disappointment, and negative developments far outweigh positive ones.

If this all sounds terribly depressing, that's because it is. However, enough light, positive touches are worked in to keep the procession of unpleasantness from getting numbing or overpowering. Remi's perseverance in the face of adversity is rather inspiring, and his genuinely childlike joy during little triumphs—getting a shiny new pair of shoes, learning to write his name—is genuinely uplifting. Enough examples of the kinder side of humanity crop up to ward off the onset of full-blown nihilism. Vitalis is a far gentler and better man than his brusque demeanor might suggest, and there are kindly folks and helping hands along the way: a cheerful and strangely moral pickpocket, an open-minded little rich girl, a greedy innkeeper who just can't seem to suppress his basic decency. The mix of innocence betrayed and trust rewarded is quite realistic, and while the series' sympathies definitely lie with the downtrodden, it isn't so simplistic as to deify the poor or vilify the rich. It does however occasionally betray its basic realism by crossing over into undignified melodrama—the anguish Remi's father displays when he decides to exploit Remi in full knowledge of the vileness of his act is so overwrought that it borders on buffoonery.

Remi is directed by celebrated director Osamu Dezaki and is, according to the cover, one of the pioneering works of multi-plane animation. The result is an eye-opening experience in more ways than one. If Dezaki's more modern works (i.e. the Air movie and Black Jack OVA's) haven't done a good job of explaining why he is so revered in some quarters, Remi clears the issue up. He uses the newfound animation technique with unbounded invention, evoking a dizzying array of moods and effects—expansive, claustrophobic, hallucinogenic—with the single, simple (and cheap) technique of panning layered planes of stills in different directions, while occasionally spiking the visuals with impressive inventions (abstract flocks of birds and butterflies, Remi's father as a threatening mass of black cross-hatches).

The settings, rural and urban, are beautiful in a very painterly way and the characters are attractive and appropriate. When not using well-deployed stretches of silence, the soundtrack uses liberal doses of simple yet catchy music, all of it exactly of the type that Vitalis' troupe might play—especially the bouncy little children's march at the end of each episode. Dezaki combines all of this into a unified, focused cinematic style that flawlessly complements Malot's tale without ever getting ostentatious.

Full of energy and spunk, the original 2001 OVA Animation Runner Kuromi offered a rare animated behind-the-scenes look at anime production in its parody of the creation of an anime episode. While its successor delves less deeply into the minutiae concerning animation production, it still has plenty enough detail to enlighten fans about the process. More importantly, though, the hassles of producing three series at one time and the breakneck speed at which events advance make Kuromi 2 an even more fun and absorbing view than the original. Although 45 minutes long, it is so entertaining, and flows along so smoothly, that it feels like it's considerably shorter. It's no wonder that it was one of the two recipients of the Notable Entry award in the Original Video category (i.e. the top category award) at the 2005 Tokyo Anime Fair.

The great charm of Kuromi 2 is that it never hits a sour note. It doesn't waste time on delving into emotions, feelings, or philosophy, and only spends a few moments considering the merits of its one serious point – namely, whether or not it's worthwhile to sacrifice quality in order to maintain a production schedule. The rest is all about playing up the craziness and hard work that the animation industry can generate. Because it concentrates only on being the best comedy it can be, it's one of the funniest of recent anime releases, with nearly every attempt at humor working beautifully. It even serves up a few parodies; watch for a Lupin the Third rip-off, among others. Brief clips of the anime series the production team are working on are also quite funny, especially the Soreike Charmy (aka SoreCha) clip with the dinosaur, which in about six seconds gives one of the most savagely funny parodies of uber-cutesy magical girl series you're ever likely to see.

The colorful members of its supporting cast have remarkably well-defined personalities for as short a work as this is, but the star is, of course, still Kuromi. She's devoted, energetic, and cute without being completely over-the-top in any aspect, and apparently learned her lessons well in the first OVA about how to manipulate the people she works with to get the job done.

What she still has to learn in this volume is how to keep from going so overboard in her commitment to the job that she sacrifices certain other necessary things, like personal hygiene and a life beyond work, which by all accounts is a common problem in the anime industry.

Her mentor in this regard is the director Hamako, whose effort to quit smoking makes for several amusing moments as we watch the various things she sticks in her mouth to replace her cigarettes and how she sometimes forgets that she has, say, a pencil there instead of a cigarette. Her look, mannerisms, and personality may remind viewers very much of Saki from Genshiken, although the original OVA predates the Genshiken anime by three years. The one character who could be done without is the annoying little octopus who keeps making side commentary.

He fills much the same role as Babbit in Kodocha, but that shouldn't be surprising given that director Akitaroh Daichi also directed Kodocha.

The artistry and animation reflect the frenetic pacing of Kuromi 2 and its emphasis on fun factor. They're less concerned with being completely clean and refined than they are with supporting the manic activities of the storytelling, but they do a very good job at this.

The heavy use of caricatures gives the character designs a bit of a cartoony feel, but the artistry regularly mixes things up by applying parody styling, modifying the refinement of the artistry to make a point, and at times deliberately going very rough on a character design and animation to emphasize the shaky status of one of the characters.

On regular occasions body designs shift to amorphous modes for comedic effect and/or to help give the impression of rapid-paced activity, much as is seen in Azumanga Daioh and other dedicated comedy titles.

The artistry's at its best when Kuromi goes into full-bore Cute Mode to try to convince one of her artists of something, but in general she is drawn as both endearingly cute and convincingly a petite young woman, a combination that can be difficult for any anime series to pull off.

The English dub uses a cast of VAs whose names are not generally associated with quality dub work, but they are the same cast as used for the original OVA and this time around they put in a great effort. Their performances are as much of a positive contributor to the overall entertainment value as any other production aspect. Hamako sounds just a little stiff at times in English, but otherwise the English performances are smooth and full of life, often adding in more character than can be heard in the original Japanese. The dub script does get a little creative at times but never strays far enough to be a negative, either. The Japanese dub does a good job, too, but this is such a well-executed English dub that it may reasonably be considered an improvement on the original. It's certainly worthy of a listen even by dedicated sub fans.

To tell the truth, Volume 9 of Yotsuba&! isn't very funny.

And that's exactly what makes it so great.

With middle age now fully bearing down upon him, Kiyohiko Azuma seems to have reached a new stage as a manga-ka, taking a more contemplative approach to his work. Gone is the frivolous prankster who pioneered the cute-girls-doing-cute-things aesthetic in Azumanga Daioh, or even the author of the early Yotsuba&! volumes where it was just one cute girl doing cute things. Naturally, these stories are at their best when Yotsuba takes center stage, evoking the nostalgia of one's own childhood misadventures. In the first chapter she runs around trying to follow a homemade schedule—her own make-believe take on "playing office." But Yotsuba's encounters with the real world are even more entertaining, especially when she tries her dad's coffee (didn't we all do this once, only to find it painfully hot and bitter?), and again when she storms a teddy bear store. What is striking about all these moments, though, is that they're framed through an outside observer's eyes—perhaps Azuma himself, watching this pure-hearted creature make the most of her youth. In that sense it's not really a child's-eye-view, but more of a grown-man's-eye-view, reminiscing about a world he can never return to.

Fortunately, things gets back into focus with the last two chapters, as Yotsuba experiences a once-in-your-childhood event: hot air balloons. There is, of course, the requisite humor as she plays among the balloon field's tall grass and tries some offerings from the food stands, but it is the actual balloon ride that showcases the series at its most heartwarming and inspiring. That feeling of rising up into the air, of entering an entirely different world, is something that Azuma (in all his contemplative, middle-aged wisdom) captures perfectly. And the way the whole volume ends—not on a punchline or exclamation point, but on a gentle, idyllic scene—makes it even sweeter.

If these charming moments seem to exist on a higher plane of existence, it's probably because Azuma's artwork has also evolved in conjunction with his storytelling. Although Yotsuba and friends are still drawn in a cute, simple style—with distinct traits to help tell them apart—the realism of the background art provides a stunning counterpoint to the character designs. Although the backgrounds are heavily based on photo references, Azuma's hatching and gradients add a delicate, hand-crafted touch to each scene. Even more impressive, though, is the visual pacing from panel to panel: although the layouts are strictly rectangular and rely on objective third-person shots, Azuma can fill any scene with emotion through pacing and rhythm. Nowhere is this better illustrated than in the balloon ride, which spends two lovingly rendered pages on a slow-motion up-up-up sequence (and then surprises us all when something unexpected goes down-down-down). Yes, cute characters and pretty backgrounds can be taught, but the magic of making art and story work together? That only comes through years of practice.

If there's one thing that's banal and ordinary about Yotsuba&!, it's the dialogue, although one can hardly blame a six-year-old for talking like a six-year-old. Most of Yotsuba's lines involve yelling and pointing out the obvious, which can be more of an annoyance than an amusement (although she does earn a few laughs for her linguistic gaffes, which are slickly translated into goofy English phrases). Attention to detail is also evident in the treatment of sound effects, which are kept in their original Japanese form but are annotated with both transliterations and English equivalents. Footnotes in the margins also explain any signage that appears in the artwork, and a thorough glossary goes over various aspects of Japanese culture that crop up in the story.

Or even the majority of it. That honor goes to Shinichiro and Hiromi, neither of whom can sustain an emotional charge the way the nobly self-sacrificing Nobuse or perceptive yet innocent Noe can. Shinichiro is both personality-challenged and irritating (as only a bland, petulant and self-interested brat can be), and Hiromi is the rare female lead who can out-bore her male counterpart. Worse yet, they never click as a potential couple. Romances live or die by their chemistry, and Shinichiro has none, particularly not with dreary little Hiromi, but also not with Ai or even Noe, whose relationship with him carries weight only because of the desperate desire to see her escape from it unhurt.

Though ostensibly about Shinichiro, Noe and Nobuse are its true heart. Two highly likeable and (to a certain extent) believable characters, when either of the two is the focus—particularly later when their disparate love lives begin to disintegrate—the series reaches melodramatic heights to match the best teen romance. Nobuse coming slowly to the realization that his girlfriend doesn't love him, Noe discovering that it was she, not Shinichiro who ultimately was unable to fly—these are powerful moments, potent emotional uppercuts that taken on their own stand with the best of their type. Those heights are ephemeral, however. After all, Noe and Nobuse may have all of the series' charm, but they don't have all of its running time.

Iriomote Island is Okinawa's second largest island. Largely undeveloped, nearly 90 percent of the island is covered by dense jungle and mangrove forests, much of which makes up the Iriomote National Park, the southernmost of Japan's national parks.

The island's attractions are based around tours to Iriomote's abundant nature including sea and river kayaking, fishing and sailing. Other activities can be enjoyed either on tours or individually such as beaches, snorkeling and various hiking trails, the most challenging of which is a 20 kilometer path through the interior of the island which should only be tackled by experienced and well prepared hikers.

Iriomote is also a popular scuba diving destination especially at Manta Way, the strait between Iriomote and nearby Kohama Island, where schools of manta rays congregate in spring and summer. Diving tours are available for all skill levels.

The island is also home to the Iriomote Yamaneko, a type of wildcat, which was discovered in 1965 and is only found on Iriomote Island. The chances of encountering an Iriomote Yamaneko are low as the nocturnal, house cat sized animal is an endangered species that is thought to number less than 100 individuals.

River Activities:

Most of the island's interior is covered in dense jungle accessible by a number of rivers that head inland from the sea. Jungle boat cruises are organized on the island's two longest rivers, the Urauchigawa (Urauchi River) and Nakamagawa (Nakama River), and guided kayak tours operate on both of those as well as many of the smaller rivers around the island.

Urauchi River is the largest river on Iriomote and is found near Uehara Port on the north western side of the island. The Nakama River Cruises start in the south of the island in Ohara and travel inland to a large mangrove tree where you can get off and walk around for a few minutes before catching a return boat. The hour long cruise has Japanese speaking guides who describe the river and mangrove trees along the way.

Kayak River Tours
Fee: around 5000 yen for a guided 3-hour tour
Kayak tours are offered on the mangrove lined Urauchi and Nakama Rivers as well as many of the smaller rivers around the island. Each river has one or two companies operating on it, with 3-hour guided tours starting at about 5000 yen per person (reservations should be made in advance). Unguided kayak rentals are also available on Urauchi and Nakama Rivers as well as a few of the smaller rivers.

Beaches:

Iriomote has its share of beautiful beaches which offer swimming, snorkeling and diving opportunities. Most of the beaches around Iriomote do not have any public facilities, and some of them can only be reached by boat as the island's coast is only partially accessible by car.

When using the beaches always beware of strong currents that can pull you out to sea and poisonous creatures such as Habu Jellyfish, a type of box jellyfish, that are most prevalent from June to October. Signs in English inform about the dangers while some beaches have netted off swimming areas. Although stings are rare, if stung you should pour vinegar over the sting, remove any tentacles, and seek medical help as it may become life threatening.

Hoshizuna no Hama
Admission: Free, no parking fees
Hoshizuna no Hama means star sand beach, and is so named because the grains of sand found here are shaped like tiny stars. However, the sand is actually the skeletons of small one-celled organisms that live among the sea grass. This beach offers great snorkeling and swimming, but is rather shallow during low tide. There are no public facilities at the beach besides the parking lot.

Yubujima is a small island separated from Iriomote by a shallow, sandy strait. Water buffalo take carts filled with visitors to the island where there are restaurants, souvenir shops and a botanical garden. The cart rides are interesting, if not touristy, and some cart drivers describe the island's history and play the sanshin (Okinawan stringed instrument).

Yamaneko Museum
Hours: 10:00 to 16:00
Closed: Mondays, national holidays, and Okinawa Day (June 6)
Fee: Free
The Wildcat Museum is a refuge for Iriomote Yamaneko that are rescued after being injured by cars. The wildcats can only be viewed through a live video feed, while the rest of the museum has displays on the ecology of the Yamaneko and other animals found on the island. English explanations are provided throughout the museum.

The story line is very interesting, it does fall on the same lines as Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, with a slight twist. I won't go into detail as to what that twist is, because I am one of those people that would not like it if someone spoiled the show for me, so why make myself a hypocrite and do the same to you, the readers. All I can tell you is you will not be disappointed if you liked Higurashi. There are so far a few twists in the story, but hey what would a psychological anime be without twists. This time I was on an official trip to Japan. The Thai Airways flight from New Delhi had a stop-over in Bangkok and the onwards flight was about 3 hours later on United. I was already so tired that I was sleeping all the way till the landing announcement over Narita Airport. The food was not to my liking at all but I did not mind till they allowed me to sleep peacefully.

Narita Airport arrivals terminal is not big comparing to Bangkok International Airport. After collecting my baggage I moved to the airport bus terminus. The details of the buses were already provided by my colleague in Japan and faced no problems in locating it. I was also told that buses are the cheapest mode of transportation and I paid only US$20 for a journey of approximately 200 kilometers. The normal train charges for this distance could be US$55! The bus were very much Japanese with announcement systems in Japanese and English. My destination was a hotel in Hitachi City which is located north of Tokyo but much south of the snow-capped Osaka. The first shock as soon as I reached Japan was that I had lost signal of my cell phone I kept trying to search for signal but it was not to be as Japanese mobile signals are on a different frequency and does not support the rest-of-world frequencies. Luckily I had my laptop with VPN connectivity and thereby access to the whole world through it. I was also carrying a sprint calling card which all telephone billings on my credit card and probably the cheapest form of staying in touch with the world in Japan.

The only challenge was to find the sprint access code in Japan which the hotel in this small town could not help me- it was 0066-33 which my hotel provided during my stay in Tokyo. Next thing of mention is the level of automation down to the toilet seats. It feels like traveling in a rocket which all the automatic functions build on the toilet seat - the flush controls, person's weight data all are controlled on the toilet seats. I somehow fit myself in the room but was surprised to see that some burly Americans were also able to adjust themselves in similar rooms. Early morning I did realize why people call Japan - "The Land of Rising Sun". It was quite bright at 4 o'clock in the morning itself! Japanese, well known for their timing reached my hotel at 8:23 AM as promised without even half a minutes' delay. The day was consumed in professional discussions. I walked back to my hotel room which was only a short distance away. The streets were very clean and looked uncluttered. A few stores were dotted on the streets with only very few cars plying around. A Macdonald was located close-by and I knew where to go if I did not get appropriate food in my hotel.

I was taken out by my hosts to a typical Japanese style restaurant. This was located at about 20 minute's brisk walk from my hotel. Shoes had to be deposited at the entrance as per Japanese norms. We were seated on chairs but the traditional Japanese custom is to sit on ground. The first serving was 'Tempura" which was mouth watering and I could relate it our very Indian "pakodas" as a close equivalent. Further on, steamed fish and steamed rice were on menu. I tried my hand with the chopsticks but it was difficult for handle for me. Duck and chicken were other delicacies to come besides "Sushi". To provide the final touches to dinner, "Saki" was served; an alcoholic beverage is made out of fermented rice with a live fish in it. The glass had to finished bottoms-up in one gulp. It was difficult to convince my hosts that I am a complete tee-tolar but they understood and did not insist on it. My host was a young Japanese executive who was a Black Belt in karate. Sports is an essential part of Japanese life and they show the same discipline in sports as in other fields. I observed Japanese to be very hard-working and made their great nation not by chance but by continuous and sustained efforts. The commitment to society of Japanese people is exemplary. I learnt that all the citizen volunteer for the security watch-keeping on a regular basis and my host was on that service last night after finishing dinner with me and between catching the train the morning. Traveling on Japanese trains was my next experience. The train timings were accurate without even half a minute deviation. The reservation counter opens later so I took the first train leaving at 6:03AM from Hitachi city in an unreserved compartment. The compartment was very clean and at this morning hours enough seats were available for everyone.

Way back in 2001, Japan was so advanced that internet services were already available on mobile connections. Almost 60% people were carrying laptops and were busy on the internet while traveling. All baggage had to be deposited in the compartment near the door. The view outside was similar to an Indian countryside -houses with sloping roofs to prevent accumulation of snow but strong enough to withstand the frequent earthquakes in this city. Tokyo was much larger with both large streets as well as smaller ones which were off the main streets. It looked like buildings everywhere with the ease of space lost. Walking on the streets one could find lot of stores selling everything from household needs to air tickets to electronic items. I bought a very cheap use-and-throw camera there for US$5.

The shops were clustered with all of them having display windows. Browsing through these shops, one could find some surprise buys. Nobody understood English so I had to get used to the place and explain my requirements either through sketches or by making gestures. Unmanned vending machines were lined on the streets selling packed water, red bull and cold drinks. All the shops accepted mostly cash and many of them regretted credit cards' payments. I used the taxi service a couple of times in Tokyo and they were so expensive that only my heartbeat was running the meter down. The minimum charges were US$6.5 and the meters raced away your money. Anyways, that was the only option left to me to reach the airport back on time. So, I spent a hefty US$80 for which I would have paid no more than US$8 for a bus ticket!

Most people who have heard of malignant mesothelioma know of it as a lung disease that occurs in people who work or have worked with asbestos. The dose dependency also affects the length of time between exposure and diagnosis, which can range from 10 to 50 years. Because even doctors sometimes have a hard time diagnosing mesothelioma, it is vital for anyone who has been exposed to asbestos to bring symptoms like shortness of breath to the attention of their doctor promptly. The earlier the diagnosis, the greater the survival rate.

The mesothelioma survival rates look particularly bleak because the disease is not usually diagnosed until it is advanced enough to cause symptoms. At that point, the treatment options are very limited. Generally speaking, from 7 to 20% of patients will survive for five years or more after being diagnosed. The average survival for someone with mesothelioma is between four and 18 months after being diagnosed. It was stripped of most of its territorial holdings and was ruled de facto by General Douglas MacArthur, designated the Supreme Commander.

Following World War II, Japan turned to a democratic system through reforms. The U.S. and allies returned complete control to Japan on April 28, 1952 via the Treaty of Peace. Although its days as a military power were over, Japan once again became an economic giant. Despite its relatively tiny land mass, Japan has the second biggest economy in the world.

Modern day Japan covers 145,902 square miles. The capital is Tokyo. The terrain is best described as rugged, mountainous islands with varying temperatures.

The people of Japan are called "Japanese." The total population is just over 127.4 million people, but the population is decreasing slightly in size. Japanese is the primarily language spoken and literacy rates are 99 percent. Japanese males have a life expectancy of 77 years while women live to 84 on average.

Summer brings a dreary rainy season in June and Japan turns into a steambath in July-August, with extreme humidity and the temperature heading as high as 40°C. During this time northern Hokkaido or the mountains of Chubu and Tohoku are some of the places to visit. Summer brings number festivals that include several big and small local festivals and impressive fireworks competitions. On July 7th or early August in some places, Tanabata is a star festival commemorating a story of star-crossed lovers who could only meet on this day. Celebrated in mid-July in eastern Japan (Kanto) and mid-August in western Japan (Kansai), Obon is the largest summer festival that honors the departed spirits of one's ancestors.

Starting in September, autumn is also the best time to visit Japan. Temperature and humidity is tolerable, days are fair, and colors of fall are mesmerizing. Winter is cold and snowy, which is good time for skiing or hot-spring hopping.

Matsuri are local festivals, usually related to the rice harvest, celebrated in late summer/early autumn. Matsuri are celebrated almost every region of Japan. Gion Matsuri (Kyoto), Tenjin Matsuri (Osaka), and Kanda and Sannō Matsuri (Tokyo) are some of the most popular.

Shichi-Go-San is the festival day for children aged three, five and seven, celebrated on 15 November. Ōmisoka - New Year is celebrated with great fervor and festivity. It is holiday that shuts down the country between December 29 and January 3. People eat festive foods and gather at temple at midnight to wish in the New Year. Second Monday of January is Seijin Shiki, which is a nation wide festival of Coming of Age Day.

Hanetsuki is a traditional Japanese New Year's game, played with a wooden paddle called hagoita and a shuttle called hane . The game resembles badminton, played without a net. While the game's popularity has declined in recent times, beautifully ornamented hagoita are still a popular collection item.

In the middle of December, the Hagoita Market (Hagoita-ichi) is held at Sensoji Temple in Asakusa, Tokyo, where ornamented wooden paddles (hagoita) are sold at numerous stands. The paddles come in different sizes, and most of them feature portraits of kabuki actors and beautiful Edo ladies. But also portraits of celebrities from entertainment, sport and politics such as Prime Minister Koizumi, Harry Potter, soccer players Nakata and Beckham and fantasy characters such as Kitty-chan and Spiderman can be found on some hagoita.

Zeniarai Benten Shrine is a popular shrine in western Kamakura, which people visit to wash their money (zeniarai means "coin washing"). It is said that money washed in the shrine's spring, will double.

Minamoto Yoritomo, the founder of the Kamakura government, ordered the shrine's construction after a god appeared in his dream and recommended him to build the shrine in order to bring peace to the country. Because the dream occurred on the day of the snake, in the month of the snake of the year of the snake, the shrine was later also dedicated to Benten, a Buddhist goddess associated with snakes.

Zeniarai Benten Shrine is a nice surviving example of the fusion of Buddhism and Shinto. Many other shrines were stripped of their Buddhist connections when the Meiji government attempted to emancipate and separate Shinto from Buddhism.

Hiroshi is a normal boy and the main character in the story. His family moved to Jyougamachi due to reasons related to his father's line of work.
